明江西吉水人，字子实。洪武二十七年进士。授行人。永乐时为吏部员外郎。十二年，与中官李达、户部主事李遏等护送哈烈使者还国，乃行经哈里、赛玛尔堪等十七国，绘其山川城郭，志其风俗物产，为《西域行程记》以献。擢右通政。有《陈竹山文集》。
