不经过彻骨寒冷，哪有梅花扑鼻芳香。

黄櫱禅师（？-855）与黄檗（音bò）、黄蘖指的同一人。身长七尺，相貌壮严，额间隆起如珠；声音朗润，意志街澹，聪慧利达，精通内学，广修夕阵，时人称之为黄檗希运。黄櫱禅师是唐时福建福清僧人，幼年在本州黄檗山出家。百丈法嗣亦参证于南泉，后于洪州黄檗山大弘禅法，有《传心法要》《宛陵录》等传世，堪为一代宗门大匠。
