“不可忍耐那喜鹊来叽叽喳喳的叫，都说你是最灵的，总是报告喜讯，可是你给我送来了什么啊？他一点消息都没有！再这样调戏我的感情，看我不把你捉了来，把你锁在笼子里，你还能说什么！”
“本来是好心来早早给她报个喜讯的，想给她的寂寞一点安慰。可是她却把好心当作了驴肝肺！竟然把俺捉了锁进笼子。唉！她的心情俺还是理解的，不跟她计较了，但愿她的那个人早日归来，哈哈，那个时候就知道俺是好心了，就会欢天喜地的把俺放出来的。”

此词舍弃了通常赋比兴手法的运用，避开了作者感情的直接抒发，却巧妙地实写了少妇和灵鹊的两段心曲。词上片是少妇语，下片是灵鹊语。全词纯用口语，模拟心理，得无理而有理之妙，体现了刚健清新、妙趣横生的艺术特色。
有人说，这上下片之间是少妇和灵鹊的问答或对话，这说法恐怕不确。实际上倒更像二者的心理独白或旁白，这不仅从语气和清理上看，它们之间不必也不像对话；而且，早期的词是入乐的，它通过演唱者的歌声诉诸人们的听觉，以口头艺术特有的声调语气，使用独白或旁白，是易于表现主人公的心理态势，以至于表达主题思想的。上片在于表明少妇的“锁”，下片在于表明灵鹊的要求“放”，这一“锁”一“放”之间，已具备了矛盾的发展、情节的推移、感情的流露、心理的呈现、形象的塑造，这也就完成了艺术创作的使命，使它升华为一件艺术品了。
灵鹊报喜是中国固有的民间风俗。不过，将灵鹊的噪叫当作行人归来的预报，毕竟只是一种相沿而成的习俗、观念，它本身并不见得合理，因而也就往往难以应验。而作者采用这一习俗入词，正是觑着它的“跛脚处”而有意生发，其目的还在于表现少妇思夫不得而对灵鹊的迁怒。于是，不合理的习俗倒构成了合理的故事情节，而且也由此增强了词作的生活气息和真实感。这有如点铁成金的魔棒，有此一着，顿使全词发生了奇妙的变化，给了两段普通的心曲以光彩、活力、生命，使词作活起来。
