林外（1106-1170年），宋福建晋江马坪村人，为林知八世孙，字岂尘，号肇殷。生于宋徽宗崇宁五年（1106年），卒于宋孝宗乾道六年（1170年）。林外的科场之路很曲折，屡试不第，直到宋高宗绍兴三十年（1160年），已超过了知天命的年龄，才登进士，他受命为兴化县令，仕途也就此止步。
