战国时期，子思向卫君举荐苟变为将。卫君也晓得苟变是个将才，但因为他在一次征赋时曾经吃过百姓的两个鸡蛋，所以没有任用他。子思说用人应该“用其所长，弃其所短”，不能因为吃过别人的两个鸡蛋而放弃大将之才。
