基本解释《史记·平原君虞卿列传》：“平原君曰：‘夫贤士之处世也，譬若锥之处囊中，其末立见……’毛遂曰：‘臣乃今日请处囊中耳。使遂早得处囊中，乃颖脱而出，非特其末见而已。’”后以“囊里盛锥”谓让有才能的人得到机会表现自己。

囊里盛锥的典故

战国时期，赵国平原君的门客毛遂主动自荐随同平原君前去与楚王谈判，平原君见他平时没有名气，说：“夫贤士之处世也，譬若锥之处囊中，其末立见。”毛遂说他愿意得处囊中才能脱颖而出。平原君允许他去，结果终于说动楚国出兵抗秦救赵。
