春秋时期，孔子的弟子颜渊从鲁国到齐国去，准备与齐国的国君谈治理国家的大道理。孔子不放心，子贡问何故，孔子说：“我想起管子的一句话‘褚小者不可以怀大，绠短者不可以汲深’，对待具体问题要具体分析，颜渊难以做到。”
