春秋时期，吴越两国交战，吴王夫差活捉了越王勾践，让勾践到吴国为奴，勾践给吴王进贡美女西施。自己则卧薪尝胆，采用文种的“十年生聚，十年教训”的策略，增加人口，聚积财物，同时勾践还积极发展农业与军事，一举攻占吴国。
